Los Musgoamigos

Image: Camilla Engman

Thank you Camilla Engman and Karin Eriksson for introducing me to Chilean doll maker and textile artist Francisca Robles. I wish I could have seen this exhibition at Manos last year.

Combining traditional Latin American doll making techniques passed down from her grandmother with modern, vibrant recycled fabric remnants, I can imagine Francisca's original but also timeless Los Musgoamigos appealing to young and old alike.
I think some of you will enjoy browsing her blog, chock-full of wonderful textile creations (just look at this quilt inspired by a child's drawing, for example). I am particularly impressed with these dolls below, made from old newspaper. Amazing what you can make when you put your mind too it, isn't it?

Francisca"s work is available in a couple of shops in Sweden and a number of places in Chile (see list of stockists and prices on her blog). She also has a small big cartel shop so keep your eye out for updates there. I have a feeling we'll be hearing a lot about this doll maker in 2011.

Liat Yaniv

So, it's Monday, the day we celebrate all things colourful!
I'd like to kick off this new week with some paper inspiration from Israeli artist Liat Yaniv, whose work I discovered here.

Liat is passionate about her craft. Despite living in Japan, travelling through Alaska and spending six months in Denmark, nothing thrills her half as much as collecting, cutting and glueing paper to create a new illustration or doll. She lets colour be her guide, juxtaposing, defining and adding texture.

I hope you enjoy exploring Liat's original and playful portfolio and blog as much as I do.
Definitely one to look out for...

Look!

Ursa Major
Articulated paper doll set with background by Luca Jenn
Babiekins Issue 2

Isn't this beautiful? I came across it whilst browsing the second issue of Babiekins, a new online children's magazine created by Priscila Barros of Little Miss Heirlooms fame. I do so love paper dolls!
If you recall, Priscila was kind enough to mention Kickcan & Conkers as one of her favourite must-visit blogs in the inaugural issue. She has also asked me to contribute to her magazine on a regular basis so, voilĂ  ! from now on I will be presenting a selection of finds in the "What's Hot, What's In, What's Now" section, starting with some beauties collected in Spring/Summer 2010.

Abracadabra

I keep stumbling upon sweetness, hope you don't mind?
I came across Abracadabra's little brooches, pocket dolls and dashing men friends a couple of days ago and really like their faces and the designer's use of colour.
The shop is in French but you can pay online if you see anything that tickles your fancy.

Wool and Water

I know that I've already shown you some of Amy Earles' (aka Wool and Water) art work, but her Halloween-inspired articulated paper-doll sets are hauntingly beautiful and would be a wonderful activity for you to do with your children. Amy has been making paper dolls since she was a little girl. Her doll kits come complete with brads for assembly and can be purchased online, along with original paintings and prints (hurry though there are only a few left). I love her work and enjoy both her blog and her flickr sets.
