Limited edition print by the wonderful Cori Dantini

Well, believe it or not, this blog is 100 posts old today! I've been on a roll lately and really didn't realise that I'd written so much. Anyway, hope you are all enjoying Kickcan & Conkers. I've got so much to share with you and of course, there's my shop, which should be opening in the next couple of weeks.

I've decided to organise a little give-away to celebrate my first blog milestone. I am offering the following three vintage treasures:

a French wooden tray puzzle

A French vintage classic - Sous l'Océan by Alain Grée
(sorry about the photo)

Abbatt Toys snap cards in original box

If you'd like to enter into the give-away, just leave me a comment telling me which of these three finds you prefer and why. The usual rules apply, if you blog or tweet about the give-away you'll get one extra entry (make sure you let me know though!). I'll randomly pick a winner on Sunday 20th of September. Look forward to hearing from you - à très bientôt!

Irina Troitskaya

My three children went back to school today, fitting then that I should begin by showing you some of Irina Troitskaya's wonderful illustrations from a school-themed Russian comic strip. You may already be familiar with Irina's work, especially if you read Uppercase magazine. I came across her portfolio quite by chance and instantly fell in love with her world of illustration, so different from anything I've ever seen before.

"Life's too short to be someone you don't want to".

Irina was born and raised in Izhevsk, a place she describes as "a city of dead ends, sad electronic music and Finno-Ugric cultural roots". Her love of drawing led her to study art at Udmurt State University for five years, but left her weary, feeling nothing but abhorrence for the way painting and drawing were regarded. After graduating she worked as a TV journalist, then in summer 2003 decided to try her chances in Moscow. She has established herself as a successful freelance illustrator working for press, advertising and book publishing, as well as being a tutor of a visual communications course. Irina is studying for a Master's degree in illustration at the University of Hertfordshire, England.

I've really enjoyed reading Irina's blog and seeing some of the things that inspire her, the environment she lives in and grew up in, all the things that she sees, lives, breathes and absorbs. The world that will influence her future creation.

I've loved seeing how dolls she played with as a child

have, over time, been transformed into these beautiful and strange Matreshkas.

How her fabulous sketchbooks

have developed into these patterns and illustrations,

and, how birds and animals from Russian litterature have been shaped into mysterious masks and striking Easter eggs.

Pictures speak louder than words.

Take the time to explore Irina's blog and portfolio, a whole new world awaits you.

Paul Thurlby

Happy Monday Morning! Don't these look great? UK-based freelance illustrator Paul Thurlby has created these fabulous Alphabet prints with a strong retro feel. Check out his Alphabet shop where he is currently offering 3 of his signed and numbered limited edition prints for the price of 2. Some fantastic designs and colour combinations here (found via delicious industries). Love the distressed look too. Any favourites? I'm betting on the Owl, the Dog, The Underground, The Rabbit, Pretty...

Vintage in Versailles

Okay, I know it's a long shot, but if you happen to be in or around Versailles, France, mid-September (11-12-13) and you love French vintage kids' clothes from the 50s, 60s and 70s, don't miss this great sale at Kentucky Rain à Versailles. Allison, an American, has over 400 vintage items waiting for you (for the most part brand new with their original price tags) boasting brand names such as le Petit Bateau, Clayeux and Absorba. Everything you need for boys and girls from 0-16 years old. Le rêve!

Beautiful Ben

Well, I don't know him personally but his work sure is lovely... I found these sweet illustrations by Ben Zen this morning. Please take a look at this Melbourne-based, music-loving designer/artist's blog, it's choc-full of delightful drawings like these. I especially love his work on brown paper bags. What a lovely, innocent world to live in. Anyone looking for a children's illustrator?

Sweet goodies

Sweet Anticipation by Helen Dardick

Hurray, hurry my friends, three great goodies await you on the web.

Anais Massini is offering a beautiful mini-doll theatre project based on the little Red Riding hood fairytale until August 31st. Just print, cut out, fix and play! (found via one of my all time faves, Ribambelles et Ribambins).

Helen Dardick of Orange You Lucky! fame has designed two super-cute "back to school" labels for you to download here. Aren't they lovely?

Last but not least, I found these beautiful boxes to make at kcs (another blog in the kris's color stripes + one boat a day family). Easy peasy projects for kids - enjoy!
