Fresh Talent: Sam Falconer

This isn't the first time I've written about old English nursery rhymes and it won't be the last. I'm a big kid at heart and I'm always delighted to find new interpretations of some of my favourite childhood ditties, especially when they're as fun as these digital collages by London-based illustrator Sam Falconer.

I discovered Sam's work when reading about the recent Kingston University Degree Show.  Inspired by a love for science, narrative and the possibilities of digital collage, Sam's quirky, playful style lends itself perfectly to children's illustration (have a look at Atom) and animation. I love how Angus Dick has brought his art work to life in Balloon.

As always, I'm looking forward to following Sam's first steps into the professional world. A little birdie told me that he was hoping to work on a series of limited-edition books, including a collation of his nursery rhymes (I'll be first in line!), AND he started filling the shelves in his etsy shop last night!

Go on, treat yourself to a set of postcards or a print!
Sam's work will put a smile on your face, and make a young graduate very happy
That's what all this is about isn't it?

Colour My Monday #17

It's Monday, the day we celebrate all things colourful on Kickcan & Conkers.
Today I'd like to share a few images from Sebastiano Ranchetti's new rainbow animal book, L'Arc-en-ciel des Animaux, published in France by Milan Jeunesse.
Beautifully illustrated throughout, L'Arc-en-ciel des Animaux, showcases 39 animals (3 per colour)  on 64 pages and looks a wonderful way of teaching little ones the colours of the rainbow and of introducing them to the richness and diversity of the natural world. One to bookmark for Christmas!

Sathya Ranjana

Wool Giraffe

I can't say that I'm a huge lover of wall stickers (although haciendo el indio's new collection looks beautiful). However, I really can't imagine a nicer wall drawing for a child's bedroom than this

Munich-based graphic designer / illustrator Sathya Ranjana creates wonderful long and short-necked creatures

and makes these beautiful books and zines, all available from her etsy shop and /or blog.

I'm well and truly smitten!

Beautiful Ben

Well, I don't know him personally but his work sure is lovely... I found these sweet illustrations by Ben Zen this morning. Please take a look at this Melbourne-based, music-loving designer/artist's blog, it's choc-full of delightful drawings like these. I especially love his work on brown paper bags. What a lovely, innocent world to live in. Anyone looking for a children's illustrator?
